The four slain members of a Dalit family, including two toddlers, were today laid to rest amid heart-wrenching scenes near Kotrani village here, while the main accused in the gruesome murders was found injured and in an unconscious condition. Baljinder Kumar alias Kala allegedly butchered his 28-year-old wife Seema, daughter Sumni(3), son Harsh (2) and his sister-in-law Reena (32) yesterday at his home in Kotrani village. Dalit student gangrape: Gujarat High Court upholds life term for five teachers

The Gujarat High Court today upheld life imprisonment of five out of six teachers for repeatedly raping a 19-year-old Dalit girl student of their college in Patan. The high court reduced punishment of the sixth teacher from life term to ten years’ imprisonment. A two-judge Bench of Justice Akil Kureshi and Justice Z K Saiyed confirmed the life imprisonment for Manish Parmar, Mahendra Prajapati, Ashwin Parmar, Kiran Patel and Suresh Patel–all teachers of Patan’s government-run Primary Teachers’ Training College (PTC)–but reduced the term of the sixth convict, Atul Patel. The National Commission for Schedule Castes (NCSC) has told the Haryana police to add strict sections in the FIR against the police personnel allegedly responsible for the custodial death of a Dalit youth in Ambala and also get the probe shifted outside Ambala. The case pertains to an alleged custodial death of 23-year-old Ram Kumar whose hand-cuffed body was recovered from railway tracks in Ambala on October 15. A 36-year-old differently-abled dalit widow, was allegedly molested by a caste Hindu trio, who also abused her using her caste name, at Thoothukudi on Monday. Sources said that Amutha, widow of Mariappan and a resident of T Saveriapuram here, was both deaf and dumb.
