Dalit groom beaten for riding buggy

In a shocking instance of caste discrimination in the capital, a dalit groom was dragged down from his buggy by two upper caste men barely 200 metres from the wedding venue in Maidangarhi, south Delhi, on Thursday night. The two upper caste men – brothers who were drunk at the time – have been arrested under the SC/ST Act. The two are alleged to have made derogatory remarks against dalits and said that the groom, Sumit Singh, was not qualified to sit on a buggy. The National Coalition on SCP/TSP Legislation (NCSTL) will stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Thursday to mount pressure on the Central government to introduce the Special Component Plan (SCP) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) Bill in the upcoming winter session of Parliament. India global capital of open defecation: NGO

With more than 626 million people daily defecating in the open, India is on the verge of becoming the “global capital of open defecation”, an NGO said on Monday. More than 55 percent women from the Dalit community daily face harassment at the hands of rowdy males when they go out in the open to defecate, said Rajesh Upadhya, executive director of the National Confederation for the Dalit. “The situation won’t improve till the Indian government stops making false promises and immediately implements the policies meant for providing proper sanitation facilities to the Dalit community,” he told media persons. South Delhi chemist alleges assault, abuse by customer with Samajwadi Party links

A chemist in his early twenties, Ashok Malik, was brutally beaten by four people in the Yusuf Sarai area in south Delhi on 17 September for reportedly failing to give a certain drug to a customer. The chemist was threatened and abused by a caller who is allegedly the daughter-in-law of Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, Richa Yadav. Growing up in the 1990s in small town Rajasthan, TR Meghwal, son of a Dalit farmer, was not allowed to touch the ‘lota’ from which upper caste boys drank water. When he was thirsty, upper caste students would pour water into his cupped palms.
