Three persons were arrested for allegedly raping a tribal woman in Kuamada village near Banki, police said on Monday.
The 27-year-old woman was rescued from a forest in a critical condition on Sunday evening.
The accused, Gundicha Samal, 30, Abhay Pradhan, 26, and Krupasindhu Jena, 30, are liquor sellers from Athagarh.
The youths used to procure liquor from a trader in Banki and sold it in villages of Athagarh. On Sunday, when the three were returning to Athagarh after buying the liquor, they saw the woman working in the field alone.
The drunk youth forcibly took her to the nearby forest and allegedly gang-raped her by gagging her mouth. After committing the crime, the accused left the unconscious woman in the forest and fled.
“Raids were conducted the entire night and all the three accused were nabbed. They have been booked on rape and attempt to murder charges,” IIC of Banki police station Niranjan Padhee said.
The condition of the woman continues to be critical. “She was bleeding heavily and continues to be unconscious. We have not been able to record her statement,” Padhee added.
Villagers blocked the Banki-Cuttack road demanding compensation for the woman. She was deserted by her husband and resided with her parents at Kuamada village. “Her family is extremely poor and not in a position to bear her treatment expenses. The government should pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to her,” said B K Sahoo, an agitator.
Senior police and district officials rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitators. After much effort they managed to convince them to withdraw the road blockade. [TOI]
