Calcutta University flouts norms on SC, ST & OBC recruitment

Despite being told by the state education department on June 30, 2011, to follow the central government’s reservation policy strictly while recruiting teaching staff in the scheduled caste (SC), scheduled tribe (ST) and other backward classes ( OBC) categories, Calcutta University (CU) is yet to heed to the order.

Authorities of CU did not follow instructions of the education department while recruiting teachers under the three categories, and this could lead to recruitment freeze even in the general category.

Raju Par mar, member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes ( NCSC), visited Calcutta University on Thursday and found gross irregularities in implementing rules for recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff.

The NCSC member found that Calcutta University did not maintain a roster for recruitment of SC, ST and OBC teachers.

Angry over the slack attitude, Parmar even warned the university authorities that they could go to jail for violating the central rules on reservation.

Later, the commission gave the varsity one month to prepare a roster showing vacant posts and how they have been filled up.

This may prompt the varsity to stop recruitment till the roster is prepared.

The varsity has to clear the backlog for recruitment of teaching staff in the three categories, which according to CU authorities, is an impossible task. If the backlog is to be cleared, recruitment in the general category may be held up for two years.

On June 30, Madhmita Roy, joint secretary of the state education department, in a letter to the university, called for implementing the reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs during recruitment of teachers.

Also, registrar Basab Chowdhury, in a note, said implementing the reservation was necessary for ‘social justice’. [hindustantimes]
