A Dalit woman upset over the humiliation meted out to her by her caste Hindu husband attempted self-immolation here on Thursday. Muruganathan (27), a native of Thanjavur moved to Tirupur some time back and settled as a daily wage worker. Later, Muruganathan, a caste Hindu, married a Dalit woman Vidya (25), who also hailed from his native place, with whom he had an affair. Recently, a girl child was born to the couple. Apprehending threat to life and property, a Dalit woman on Thursday petitioned to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes here seeking its help to obtain a gun licence. S. Sudha of Veppamarathur village in Dharmapuri district has alleged harassment and repeated threats to her life even as the police have provided her with a round-the-clock security cover. Continued oppression by other castes is one of the reasons for the same — said former IAS officer and noted writer P Sivakami. A 36-year-old differently-abled dalit widow, was allegedly molested by a caste Hindu trio, who also abused her using her caste name, at Thoothukudi on Monday. Sources said that Amutha, widow of Mariappan and a resident of T Saveriapuram here, was both deaf and dumb. Special screening of ‘Dr. Ambedkar’ evokes good response in Hosur

A film on the life of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution, evoked good response from the audience in Hosur on Sunday. The film, screened at Raghavendra Theatre on the Denkanikottai Road, attracted students, officials and members of Dalit associations in the district. The screening was organised by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ and Artistes’ Association.
