A day after his daughter was caught on camera distributing cash to policemen outside Naini jail in Allahabad, controversial ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Vijay Mishra came out with a bizarre explanation claiming that the money was actually a loan taken from them. He claimed that his daughter was paying back the loan but media presented the matter in a distorted manner. On the other hand, Mishra’s daughter Seema contradicted her father by saying that she gave money to the policemen when they asked her for sweets to celebrate Mishra’s release from jail after one-and-a-half-year.
Mishra, who has 62 criminal cases against him, was arrested during previous Mayawati rule on charges of bomb attack on the then minister Nand Kumar Gupta. The blast left Gupta injured and two persons injured which included a police guard and a journalist of the Indian Express. However, the SP government after coming to power is withdrawing cases against Mishra claiming that they were politically motivated. In June earlier this year, Mishra was allowed by the court to attend assembly session but he violated the order and attended the lunch hosted by the SP for Congress’s presidential candidate Pranab Mukherji. Later, the MLA got himself admitted in a hospital in Lucknow to avoid jail stay, although doctors found him fit.
Mishra said that his daughter used to visit him in jail and took loan from these policemen on several occasions to bring cigarettes and medicine. Three policemen caught on camera accepting money have been identified as Vijay Sonkar, Gulab and Rajkumar. They have been put under suspension after the matter was highlighted in the media. The district police chief has also ordered an investigation into the episode. [TOI]
